Crash rates rise with the frequency of hard braking

On Behalf of | Jul 22, 2020 | Personal Injury

You travel by car a lot in and around Paducah, Kentucky, and you’ve been able to avoid collisions with other drivers: until now. Your personal injury protection insurance may cover some of the losses but not all, in which case you may have the chance to file a third-party insurance claim.

Much will depend on proving the other driver’s negligence. Perhaps he or she was tailgating, cut in front of you and slowed down or did something else that was negligent or downright aggressive. Allstate has a report out that shows how hard braking, in particular, is linked to high collision rates.

Baltimore drivers see the most collisions

The auto insurer took the 200 most populous cities in the U.S. and ranked them by the rate of hard-braking events per 1,000 miles and the rate of collisions. It turns out that the least safe city was Baltimore, Maryland, with drivers getting in a collision every four years, compared to the national average of every 10.57 years, and braking hard more than 30 times per 1,000 miles, compared to the nationwide average of 19 times.

The safest city was Brownsville, Texas, with drivers being involved in a collision only once every 15 years. However, Allstate did not reveal this city’s hard-braking statistics. The correlation is clear though: The fewer hard-braking events there are, the fewer collisions occur.

Where Allstate took its data

Allstate looked exclusively at collisions that resulted in a property damage claim. The study period was January 2016 to December 2017. The 200 cities were ranked based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The hard-braking data was taken from Allstate’s Drivewise telematics program and included only those customers who voluntarily enrolled in the program between 2016 and 2017.

Filing a claim with legal assistance

Perhaps the other driver braked hard in front of you, making a rear-end collision inevitable. You should know that pursuing a personal injury case can be difficult because the other side may try to place all or most of the blame on you. With a lawyer, you may get the local representation you need during settlement negotiations.
